Post 26/11, Indian Coast Guard strengthens base in Gujarat
Following the Mumbai terror attacks, the Indian Coast Guard has decided to set up their North Western Region base in Gujarat with its headquarters in Gandhinagar. What's more! To beef up security, 'Vijaya', a modern patrolling ship equipped with an onboard helicopter has already been re-based from Mumbai to Porbandar permanently to defend Gujarat's sea coast.
It may be recalled that the terrorists had used a crawler-M V Kuber to launch terror attacks in Mumbai using Porbandar waters.
The move is part of Gujarat being turned into a North Western Region for Indian Coast Guards as sanctioned by the Central government. Earlier, Gujarat coast used to come under the jurisdiction of Western Region headquartered out of Mumbai.
"The Porbandar-based Indian Coast Guard had a longstanding demand of a big ship to protect the area ever since MV Kuber boat sailed out of here. Finally the demand has been fulfilled with Porbandar getting a modern patrolling ship 'Vijaya' that has been re-based from Mumbai and will now operate permanently from here," said a defence spokesperson.
According to the official, the North Western Region will now be headed by an officer of the rank of IG and will soon witness expansion in terms of manpower as well as equipment.
Meanwhile, the ship 'Vijaya', which used to visit Porbandar coast, will be the first big ship based out of Gujarat. The vessel carries a helicopter on board, apart from a pollution response equipment to fight oil spills on sea as well as a mini operation theatre for immediate first aid and treatment to the rescued victims at sea.
Armed with two powerful marine ‘pelistic’ engines, the ship is commanded by a Commandant having vast sea and air experience. It has a team of nine officers and 85 sailors. It also carries additional specialist officers and sailors, when need arises. 'Vijaya' has long endurance and can stay in the sea for a 22-days-long period.
"The vessel will not only provide better equipment for security and patrolling at Porbandarbut will also strengthen the air wing.

Good Show,
Keep the Coast Guard flag up and flying, hope many more HQs will open to keep our coast safe
Dear BP,
Well the coast guard will grow , but at what cost, do this nation requires two marine forces. Navy can do this job in much better way and that too without additional HQs which your force is creating every next day.
After all it is one country and tax payer money
Dear Naval gun,
Do you remember when navy last fired on enemy sailors, I will tell you 39 years back and you still think you can do this job better than coast guard, check your ?
I agree with BSF above that guns of Navy must be rusted and Coast Guard is doing good job.
Dear Sir,
It appears that no masala is left both for your blog and in major Navdeep blog. I would request to fire the first salvo to start some issue so that both AF and CPOs officer.
PLEASE ADD' can react 'at the end in above remarks
Dear Sir,
Inspite of showing the door by govt, some hard nuts still think Ltcol is equivalent to Commandant.
When these fouji will understand
Anony above,
Please keep this knowledge up to you.
Which govt order states that LTcol will be treated equivalent to officer with GP-7600
Dear BP
It is a fact that the military is upset at the treatment meted out to soldiers. If the different land forces were operating in isolation, each could evolve its own cadre structure, wear uniforms of the kind that suits them, display a dozen stars on their cars.
But if they are to operate in the same environment, the norms must have a semblance of uniformity. Military and the Police must complement each other; not compete. Each has to see the viewpoint of the other. The road that divides North Block and South Block needs to be bridged.
I do hope I made my self clear on the issue, and picked up these thoughts for very senior military officer article
Dear Sir,
Please add chat box to your blog
Dear above,
I will try to add chat box, if it helps my readers. However chat box have its own advantage and drawback.
Dear Sir,
If you see the ad given in all news papers the pay scale for cdr/Ltcol is PB4A and that of capt/col is PB-4. IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT GOVT HAVE NOT PUT LTCOL IN PB-4
Dear BP,
What is the use of argument regarding PB-4 and PB-4A. It is disheartening that your service is still equating commander with the commandants despite different Pay Bands disregarding the basic principle of seniority promulgated by Govt. This is resulting rubbing salt to the wounds of Comdt (JG).
Is some one in CG listening?????
Dear above,
CG is not equating Commandant with commander, it is only with Captain(IN),However the shoulder stripes of Commandants which creats doubts in the mind of Naval officers.
Hope in some more time Commandants will start to wear 4 stripes, thus all doubts will be cleared
Dear BP,
Are u sure it is not being done??? I think Navy and coast guard has not renewed the letter of the year 2005, which equate commander with commandant.Same is still being followed in most of the places.
Please update.......!!!
The equation which you are telling is only people like you have in their mind. Do you think navy will ever let it happen.
Anony above,
Get your funda right, it is now grade pay which equates the post in various govt organisations.
Dear BSF,
Grade Pay equation may be valid in other places but not in Coast Guard-Navy. That is not going to change as none of the party is keen to change the equation pre VIth pay commission. And In Coast Guard the people will equate commander with Commandant and the reasons need not to explained as CG is CG . That's it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Anony,
The thumb line is grade pay, no other letter is more valuable than GOI orders. The present orders are very clear that GP is to define the status on any officer. The Commander/LTcol/Wgcdr are to be equated with GP of 7600 and can go on deputation on post with GP 7600 only.
